Recently Packt Publishing published two new books about Scratch 2.0:

Scratch Cookbook

This book (written by Brandon Milonovich) is divided in different recipes.
Each recipe (=chapter) addresses a subject, like story telling, game design, sound.
After reading chapter 1 (“Getting Started with Scratch”), you can skip chapters and jump right to a chapter which you’re interested in (without reading the rest).

The book explains a lot about all the basics.
Therefore it’s an excellent book for beginners.

It’s also a must-read for parents, teachers and others who helps children with programming in Scratch.

You can buy it at PacktPub.com and bol.com.

Scratch 2.0 Game Development

This book is written by the Dutchman Sergio van Pul and Jessica Chiang.
I would’ve loved to see a Dutch version of it also, especially because it’s written by a Dutchman (but that’s probably a choice of the publisher, not Sergio’s)..

But… it’s a must-read for the advanced Scratcher who wants to make games.
Different concepts of gamedesign are explained in 10 chapters and made in Scratch.

Each chapter is a mission which has to be accomplished; at the beginning of a chapter you get a Mission briefing which explains the mission and why it’s fun.
Then all the steps you have to do are explained.
The chapter end with a Hotshot Challenge.

This book is for older children, with experience in programming in Scratch, who wants to design games.
It’s also a must-read for parents, teachers and others who helps children with programming in Scratch.

The paperback is in black and white (also the screenshots), the e-book is in color.

You can buy it at PacktPub.com and bol.com.

{I received both e-book from the publisher to review them.}
